What an APK file actually contains
An APK is an archive holding compiled code, images and other resources, a manifest declaring what the app is allowed to do, and a cryptographic signature. When you install one, Android reads the manifest, checks the signature, and registers the app under the package identifier the manifest declares.
The signature is the interesting part. It does not tell you that an app is trustworthy; it tells you that every update signed with the same key came from whoever holds that key. That is a continuity guarantee, not a safety guarantee, and it is the whole basis on which Android decides whether one build can update another.
Why re-signed builds are a real distinction
Anyone can decompile an APK, change it, rebuild it and sign it with their own key. The result can carry the same name and icon while behaving differently. Android will refuse to install it over the original, which is usually the first practical sign that a file did not come from the same source as the one already on the device.
What sideloading changes
Installing outside a store removes the review layer, however imperfect that layer is. There is no listing history, no developer account tied to an identity, and no mechanism to pull a bad build back off your device. Updates arrive only if you go looking for them.
Android asks you to grant install permission to the app doing the installing — typically your browser. Grant it for the moment you need it and revoke it afterwards. Leaving it on means any later download can prompt for install with one accidental tap.

- Does it publish a version and a date? Vague labels such as latest with no version string suggest nobody is tracking builds.
- How many redirects does the download take? Chains through shorteners and ad gateways are how the wrong file gets substituted.
- Does the page make outcome promises? A download page selling guaranteed wins is not a neutral distributor.
- Is there any way to report a problem? If not, there is also no accountability.
